Baker & McKenzie defined the global law firm in the 20th Century, and we are redefining it to meet the challenges of the global economy in the 21st. We bring matters the instinctively global perspective and deep market knowledge and insights of more than 4200 locally admitted lawyers in 77 offices worldwide. We have a distinctive global way of thinking, working and behaving – ‘fluency’ – across borders, issues and practices.
We understand the challenges of the global economy because we have been at the forefront of its evolution. Since 1949, we have advised leading corporations on the issues of today’s integrated world market. We have cultivated the culture, commercial pragmatism and technical and interpersonal skills required to deliver world-class service tailored to the preferences of world-class clients worldwide.
Baker & McKenzie Hong Kong runs two Summer Clerkship programmes in June and July respectively.
The Summer Clerkship is a comprehensive four week programme and aims to give students the opportunity of experiencing first-hand what it is like to work at the firm. In addition to getting to know the firm’s culture, vacation clerks will participate in the training programmes available to trainees and junior lawyers, and be exposed to the type of work typically undertaken by them.
The Hong Kong office has an annual intake of trainee solicitors who undertake the Hong Kong Law Society mandatory two year training period to qualify as a solicitor in Hong Kong. During the two year training contract, our trainee solicitors rotate through six different practice groups, giving them a wide exposure to different types of work which is unparalleled. The six rotations consist of four core rotations and two elective rotations.
Core rotations include Corporate, Dispute Resolution, and Property. Elective rotations include Banking and Finance, Intellectual Property and Tax. Trainee solicitors may be seconded to other Baker & McKenzie offices or to clients as one of their training rotations.
To apply, candidates should be in their penultimate year of study of their (undergraduate or postgraduate) law degree programme, have strong academic results, good Chinese language skills (written and spoken) and intend to practice in Hong Kong after their legal studies.
Early interviews will be held locally by our visiting Head of Graduate Recruitment and Recruitment Partner from Hong Kong in Melbourne and Sydney at around the time of the Hong Kong Law Fairs in Australia (exact dates to be confirmed – please watch out for notices from your Law School).
Please submit your application together with your transcripts asap if you wish to apply and secure an early interview opportunity.
As applications will be considered on a rolling basis, early application for early interview is strongly recommended.
The clerkship programme is the main pathway into securing a training contract with the firm, as clerks who perform well during the programme will be selected to join our Hong Kong office after they have completed their legal studies and their P.C.LL. Participation is therefore strongly recommended for those seeking a 2017 training contract.
